For the last project of my Visual Interface Design minor, I developed an interactive website about the North Sea. The goal of the project was to introduce users to the different aspects of the North Sea in an accessible and engaging way. Through storytelling and interaction, users are taken on a digital journey where they gradually descend through the different layers of the sea, discovering new information along the way.
The website combines a narrative user experience with a minimalist design. Developed using React, TypeScript, and CSS, the project brings design and development together in one interactive experience. Users are not only informed but also encouraged to reflect on the role and significance of the North Sea.
What fascinated me about the North Sea was that I initially knew very little about what actually takes place in this area. Many people know the North Sea mainly as a place to visit the beach, but during my research I discovered that much more is happening beneath the surface than most people realize. Nature, shipping, fishing, energy production, and many other human activities all come together in this environment, making the North Sea a surprisingly complex region.
Because the subject was relatively unfamiliar to me at first, I found it especially interesting to explore it in greater depth. Throughout the project, I gained a lot of new knowledge about the North Sea and the various topics connected to it. With this graduation project, I wanted to present that knowledge in an accessible and interactive way, allowing users to gain a better understanding of what happens on, around, and beneath the North Sea.
As a designer, I always put the user first. I believe that an interface should be user-friendly and intuitive, allowing users to understand how to navigate a product without needing instructions. A good design supports the user and ensures that attention is focused on the content rather than on figuring out how the interface works.
I also believe that an interface should do more than simply present information; it should create an experience. By applying storytelling and interaction, users can become actively engaged with the content and discover it in a more natural way. I applied this vision in my graduation project by taking users on an interactive journey through the different layers of the North Sea, where information is explored step by step. What distinguishes me as a designer is my ability to combine creativity with programming. This allows me to transform creative concepts into fully realized digital experiences, such as websites.
With this graduation project, I wanted to teach users more about the North Sea. I deliberately avoided taking a personal stance on the topics presented. Instead, I wanted to encourage users to reflect on the subjects explored throughout the website and form their own opinions.
